Professionalism; Consistency; Dedicaton; Enthusiasm; Teamwork, Love of the sport….these are the aspects that Matt Whitcomb repeatedly stressed during the first day of camp and again during his evening presentation. What does professionalism mean for a nordic skier looking toward Junior Nationals, the National Team, the Olympics?
When you are training by yourself it means having a training plan which will be your road map to success. It means being disciplined to get out there everyday and get after it. It means sticking to the workout intensity you have planned. It means attention to details, like bringing a dry shirt to change into after your workout. And carrying a sports drink to replenish electrolyes during the workout; And bringing a snack to eat immediately after your workout- not 1 hour later, but immediately.
When you are an athlete training in a group environment like a camp or a club workout, it means staying focused on what you need to be doing to become a better skier. It means encouraging your team mates during a workout , race or whenever it is needed. It means being on time and being respectful.
A whole is equal to the sum of its parts… The message is simple really. If you pay attention to the small things, the bigger ones will fall into place. Have patience, keep doing the work and believe that you will get there.
